Walking the trail:

  • Summary: 84 miles of coast to coast walking along many of the ruins of Hadrian's Wall, built by the Romans as a border to their empire. Totally fascinating to think that what you are seeing was built almost 2000 years ago. History and rural outdoor lovers will love this epic English long distance adventure.

Experience ancient English and Roman history along this beautifully fantastic 84-mile (135KM) coast to coast long distance hike.

Construction of Hadrian's wall began in 122 AD by emperor Hadrian during the Roman occupation of England and was built to protect the Roman kingdom from the northern barbarians at the time. Although only small sections remain along the 84-mile stretch, the sections that can be seen are still remarkable considering the near 2000-year time they have stood in this northern part of England. The wall line is also a UNESCO World Heritage Site.

This northern countryside is rather rugged and remote with rolling open landscapes to the north and the hills of the North Pennines and the Lake District to the south. It's not all rural countryside as the trail windows through the vibrant cities of Carlisle and Newcastle.

The path starts in the East from Wallsend, Newcastle upon Tyne to Bowness-on-Solway in Cumbria on the west coast. (of course the route can be walked in the opposite direction as well)

The path is perfect to complete in one long multiday adventure from start to finish or as individual day walks as a more leisurely way to discover. Thats the beauty of England's long-distance trails and their abundance of options of start and finish points as well as accommodation.

This is one of the finest ways to experience the great English countryside and walk in the path of our history.

I myself have only so far walked the sections between Brampton & Hayden Bridge so will be returning very soon to walk some more sections and add more photography to this feature.

All I can say for this section I walked is that it was far more remote than I expected. So, if you crave a rural adventure then this is for you.

Any questions please feel free to ask.
