  • Summary: A walk in the wilderness heart of the Brecon Beacons. Get away from the crowds and enjoy quiet ridgeline valleys and the beautiful Llyn-Y-Fan-Fach.



The Brecon Beacons is a great place to escape for some low mountain/hill trails.

Most people will head to Pen y Fan (the highest mountain in the Brecons at 886m) which is a great place to visit albeit extremely busy as its easily accessible from the road!

I like to get away from the crowds and get into the open wilderness so for this trail ive gone to the west of the Brecons for a 12.5mile circular route that climbs up a steep ridgeline towards Fan Brycheiniog (802m) and then round the stunning looking Llyn Y Fan Fach, returning back in the lower valley.

Total walking ascent elevation is 1120m and descent the same. The views on this route are spectacular and reminded me very much of the sharp green mountain valleys of Iceland. Make sure you bring waterproof gear as we had a 90 minute downpour of rain and low visibility high on the ridge which luckily cleared just as we come round to Llyn Y Fan Fach. (giving a fantastic and most welcome view)

The start of the walk goes from the car park along the A4067 by the Tafarn-y-Garreg Inn, (also a camp site) postcode SA9 1GS. The car park is part of the pub so ensure you visit afterwards for a well deserved drink and meal. It’s a great little pub and well worth the visit!
