Longyearbyen to Mohnbukta Bay
Svalbard
The trail:
- Location: Svalbard
- Categories: Spring / Winter / Tundra / Ice cap / Highland / Mountain / Plain / Coastal / Islands / Rural / Sea / Lake
- Duration: 1 Day
- Distance: 50 miles
Walking the trail:
- Summary: Jump on a snow mobile and head across to the magnificent east coast where nature is untouched and the land is frozen solid. If you're super lucky you might spot a Polar Bear but either way its a 50 mile adventure to remember.
Bit of a cheat feature here as rather than a hike this is a snow mobile adventure!
However during my trip to Svalbard this day was particularly epic with constantly wonderful artic views all day so deserves a focus spot.
Svalbard is all about tour activities due to the risk and danger of Polar bear encounters so as a tourist you are at the mercy of many activities to partake in.
This was one of my favorites, a massive day out on snow mobiles across glaciers and arctic valleys to reach the remote east coast of Svalbard. Here you can ride the snow mobiles across the sea ice around Mohnbukta Bay.
It’s a massive full day out covering 50 miles on the snow mobiles. Having never used one before I found it fairly easy going for the day so no real experience is required.
Most people will want to do this tour for a chance to see the Polar Bear. Even if you don’t see one its still a must do day out and if you do its going to be the best money you’ve ever spent! The tour guides are very knowledgable on the landscape and the Polar Bear, including the challenges they will face due to global warming. Svalbard is the fast warming place on the planet and Polar Bears will have a massive challenge to adapt quickly to these changes.
The tour I took was with Better Moments:

Lots of information about the day on the website.
If you find yourself in Svalbard get this booked up quickly as places go fast! Its expensive but you don’t go to Svalbard to sit in a cabin right?!
