Walking the trail:

  • Summary: Explore the colourful heathland and woodland of this elevated section of the New Forest National Park in the south of England. Fantastic views over the surrounding areas especially during sunset hours. Look out for grazing ponies and deer hidden amongst the woodland.

The New Forest National Park is more than just a forest. There are plenty of ancient woodland areas and even larger area of open heathland including rivers, valleys, mudflats and more. It contains the largest area of lowland heath in southern England.

The park has infinite hiking potential. You are free to roam and explore with hundreds of footpaths that pass across large areas of heathland or wind into dense sections of forest. It can be tailored to suit whatever you fancy seeing or areas you see to walk to.

The New Forest is rich in wildlife thanks to the diversity of woodland and healthand habitat. This combination of natural environments is hard to find anywhere else in western Europe.

This circular walk explores the area of Ibsley and Rockford common on the western edges of the park (near Ringwood) which consists of miles of footpaths through attractive colourful heathland and woodland. (especially late summer) The commons are in an elevated position (quite hilly for the New Forest) so there are fine views over areas of the park which is lovely during sunset hours. Seeing the sunset across multiple layers of forest is a fine end to a days walking. Most of the photos shown were taken early September when the heathland was an amazing mix of purples and oranges. Definitely recommended to visit during this time.

The route shown is just a guide. Head out and do what you fancy and go where you fancy! You will no doubt spot grazing ponies and cattle but if you’re lucky and quiet you will spot  some deer sneaking around in the forests and maybe other wildlife.

Route starts from Rockford in the National Trust car park located at postcode BH24 3NF.
