Walking the trail:

  • Summary: A short drive from Kazbegi is the small village of Juta. Beyond Juta lies a fantastic valley which holds the best mountain views of them all, the amazing Chaukhi mountain, also regarded as the "Georgian Dolomites" A Caucasus day hike not to be missed!

The Chauki Massif mountain range with its 7 sharp peaks (up too 3842m elevation) are one of the highlights of the Georgian Caucasus mountains.

AKA The Georgian Dolomites!

A truly impressive view, well worth the effort visiting if you have a few days of adventures around the Kazbegi (Stepantsminda) area.

This is a popular and pretty easy hike from the small village of Juta high up in the mountains, served by a small road from the highway. Juta is considered one of the highest settlements in Georgia at 2230m.

It is from Juta that you enter the scenic and spectacular landscape of the Juta valley, which at the end lies the Chauki Massif. The close proximity of these mountains is really what makes this hike so rewarding.

The pathway up from the village is a long slowly ascending path of easy walking which takes you all the way up to a small lake and hut right underneath the massif. You can keep walking around the the south east further up into the mountain valley which will bring you to Chaukhi pass pass at 3341m. A pass which is severley snow covered until late in the summer season due to its elevation. From there you can then descend to the village of Roshka. This particular hike is around 12 miles and suitable for more experienced alpine hikers.

Once you’ve enjoyed your fill of Chauki Masif goodness, you head back down the valley towards Juta and enjoy a break at the Fifth season safe/guest house, which has a large selection of cool outdoor seating/hammocks and great views looking back up to the Massif.

There is no public transport to Juta so you can either hire a taxi and then arrange a pickup or you can use a minibus trip that is arranged by “Mountain Freaks” which departs twice daily at 9.15am (4.30pm pickup) and 11.15am (6.30pm pickup) the cost is 45 GEL.
