Walking the trail:

  • Summary: Book a 4x4 tour from Kangerlussuaq which will take you up to the edge of the Greenland's incredibly vast ice sheet, Point 660. Have a wander around the ice and then a spend a few km of walking up too Russell Glacier and witness nature as the glacier slowly retreats and crumbles. A must excursion when visiting Kangerlussuaq!

When you look at a world map, its hard to miss the massive region of white ice in the arctic region. This being Greenland's massive icecap which covers an incomprehensively large 1.71 million km and measures 2900km long x 1100km wide at its maximum. Its the second largest body of ice in the world

To be able to visit this and walk on it (even on its very edge) is a claim that few can say!

Its a must do excursion if visiting Kangerlussuaq. The trip involves jumping in a 4WD truck and driving the 34km road to the Icecap. (a road that was mostly built by VW in the early 2000s as part of their winter car testing program)

A small hike to Russel Glacier is also included which is the last point of the icecap before discharging its ice and waters in the valley towards Kangerlussuaq and the sea. We saw some pretty powerful breaks/falls in the ice on our visit.

The tour guide/driver will give lots of local knowledge of the landscape and the history of Kangerlussuaq.

More information from one of the tour operators, Albatross is below: Its the company I used and was very impressed with the day.
