Walking the trail:

  • Summary: Take a coastal walk on the wild and magnificent Isle of Mull. A gentle 7.5 mile route of rolling coastal hills and rugged coastline passing many ancient settlement ruins from the 18th and 19th Century. Best walked on a late afternoon to enjoy a sunset over the bay once finished. Perfect!

If you find yourself on the rather beautiful Isle of Mull in Scotland (I must insist you visit!) then this is rather gentle and relaxing walk along the northern west coast of the island from Calgary.

Calgary is located 5 miles west of Derviag and 12 miles from the islands capital Tobermory.

Starting from Calgary Bay/Beach which is a long sweeping beach of calcium rich sandy soils. The views across the bay especially during sunset are pretty special.

The track follows the northern side of the beach and all the way around the coast until you reach the far hilly corner of Mull. It's a lovely mixed landscape of rolling hills (walking mostly of flat tracks but some minor steep sections) and rugged coastline.

Once you reach the end of the route you retrace your steps back to Calgary making a total of around 7.5 miles total.

The highlight of this route is seeing the old deserted village of Inivea. Many roofless stone ruins  (around 20 buildings) scatter the grassy flats under the hills. An atmospheric reminder of the highland landlord clearances of people back in the early 1800s, likely to make room for livestock that was more profitable for the land owner. Unfortunately, the relocation of many people, some overseas meant a lot died during the trips from disease and illness. The ruins remind me very much of the deserted village of Boreraig on the Isle of Skye which is also worth visiting and walking through. (see my Isle of Skye Trail long distance trail feature)

This is no big epic hike, just a very relaxed stroll into the quiet wilds of Mull. Perfect for a late afternoon and evening walk. There are also plenty of opportunities to spot some of Mulls famed wildlife if you're lucky!

To access the walk there is a car park on the northern side of the beach just off the main B8073 road. Public toilets are along the south side. During summer months I believe the refreshment hut there is also open.

If you have any questions about this hike then please feel free to message. GPX route available.
